WRITING HOMEWORK - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2009

November 17th, 2009

Period 3 has an earned, no homework night tonight for good work during class these last 2 1/2 weeks!  Good job.  As for Period 2 and 4…………….

Discover 4 words that you never heard of before.  Write them down and include their definitions.  Create 1 haiku and 1 cinquain for 2 of the of the 4 words.  Make an illustration to go along with your haiku and your cinquain.  It can be a symbolic image or real, illustrating the meaning, or tone embedded in each poem.  Don’t forget your heading!  Two homeworks from Monday night were recycled because there was no name on them.

Haiku;  a 3 lined poem  (first line has 5 syllables, second line has 7 syllables, and the final line has 5 syllables)

Cinquain:  a 5 lined poem (1st line-noun, 2nd line- 2 adjectives, 3rd line - 3 verbs, 4th line - 4 emotion words or 1 sentence, 5th line - synonym or “sum it up” word

Did you complete a word hunt of 25 or more words, fill a page with them and then construct a poem of some of them?

Did you hand in your published literary essay on Friday?  If not, turn them in this week.  They are late and will be marked down as missing the deadline date.

WRITING HOMEWORK, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH, 2009 **if the site is not up and running, please take tonight to read as a “poet”, noticing words and phrases that are written in poetic language

November 16th, 2009

visit www.stonesoup.com and open the link “writing”.  Read through 2 to 5 poems (you are welcome to look at more) and select one to print out.

Highlight words and phrases that capture your attention.

Write a paragraph reaction/interpretation of the poem.  Staple your paragraph to the poem that you printed out.  If your printer is on the blink, make sure that you ask me for copies (I will have extras under the smartboard in class)

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH, WRITING HOMEWORK

November 16th, 2009

You were given a worksheet with 2 poems.  Please read the poem out loud, thinking of mood and tone like we talked about today in class.  Answer the questions about each poem.  Remember that you MUST put your heading on the paper.  It will most definitely get recycled if you do not do so and you will receive no credit for it.  It is due tomorrow.

WRITING HOMEWORK-TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH- Not everyone handed this in. Make sure that you meet homework deadlines.

November 9th, 2009

river-of-words-list.doc   This is one list that I made and you used in your “words party” on Monday.

You will look through dictionaries, thesaurus, books, magazines;  places where you can find words.  Remember that poets are curious about the world of words and they are collectors of words.  Type or handwrite a whole page worth of words (you should collect 25 or more).  Highlight some of your favorites and make up a poem using some of your words. See the definition for poem below to make sure you are on track.  This will be due on Monday (you are welcome to hand it in tomorrow).

The definition of a poem:   Written work  designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme.
